The kitchen at the heart of a community

We want everyone in Camden to eat well every day. With support from the We Make Camden Kit, residents across the borough are leading community initiatives to help to achieve this Mission.

One resident who’s supporting her community to eat well is Luthfa, who runs Meet and Grain – a community kitchen at Maiden Lane Estate.

Luthfa is wearing a light green head scarf and cream kaftan with green patterns on it. She is standing in front of one of the blocks on Maiden Lane estate, against green railings – there are trees and cars also in the background. Luthfa is smiling directly at the camera.

Luthfa, tell us more about Meet and Grain:

“Meet and Grain is a community kitchen that aims to provide free, warm meals for vulnerable individuals and those over 60. Its purpose is to combat food insecurity, foster community connection and promote social wellbeing among those who may feel isolated or in need.”

“The project was inspired by the rise in loneliness experienced by senior citizens and the cost of living. At Maiden Lane Estate, community members wanted to create a welcoming space where people could gather, enjoy nutritious meals and build relationships in a nice cosy place.”

“We serve both nutritional and emotional needs, reinforcing the sense of community and support through times of hardships by creating an environment of positivity and engagement in Camden.”

What impact is the kitchen making in the community?

“The community kitchen is making a significant difference in several ways.”

“Reducing hunger – by providing free meals, the project alleviates hunger among the vulnerable and they have access to nutritious warm meals.”

“Strengthening social connections – it’s a place where communities can connect, share stories, foster friendships and reduce loneliness.”

Every month, to give back to the community has been a different experience altogether. It is so rewarding and beautiful to see the smiles on people’s faces and the appreciation from the community.”

How has the We Make Camden Kit helped you?

“The We Make Camden Kit has been the stepping stone for Meet and Grain and has inspired us to carry on, foster changes and grow stronger as a community.”

“With funding and support, the We Make Camden Kit has empowered the community kitchen project to be able to deliver high quality meals and service, for free.”

Why should other residents apply to the Kit?

“I would encourage more Camden residents to start their own project by applying for the We Make Camden Kit. It is your chance to turn your passion into action.”

“You, the residents, are the eyes and ears of your community, and the We Make Camden Kit can help to bring your project to life! There is support all the way and your project can tackle community needs and improve lives.”

What’s next for Meet and Grain?

“For the future, I hope we can secure more funding for the community kitchen to become sustainable long term and serve a larger number of individuals in need. We would like to make it fortnightly, especially through the cold seasons.”

“I’d also like to work and collaborate with other projects, local businesses where we can reach out to more local people who are vulnerable and home bound, where we can deliver and continue community support.”
